Fastnet Rock back in contention for first-season title

Coolmore sire Fastnet Rock clawed his way back into contention for the Australian first-season sires’ premiership for individual winners.

His beautifully bred filly Hilton Head trounced her rivals in the Austin Pool Services Plate (1110m) at Doomben yesterday to take his tally to 10 winners.  Fastnet Rock is now equal with Darley’s Shamardal, one winner adrift of Arrowfield sire Not A Single Doubt.

Not A Single Doubt ($1.90) is the current favourite with sportingbet.com.au to take the title ahead of Shamardal and Fastnet Rock who are both quoted at $3.20.

Hilton Head (2f Fastnet Rock – Golden Delicious by Made Of Gold) ran a race-record 1.05.24s on debut and trainer Tony Noonan is already mapping out spring plans for the filly.

“She’s a nice type,” Noonan said.  “I thought she was a Magic Millions prospect but we had a couple of hiccups early on.  She will go for a short break and I will set her for a race like the Red Roses Stakes (LR) on VRC Oaks Day.”

Hilton Head was a half-million dollar buy from the Widden Stud consignment at the 2008 Gold Coast Magic Millions.  Her dam Golden Delicious won 13 races and was a stakes winner of the G3 Prince of Wales Stakes at Ascot and William Crockett Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Besides his 10 individual winners, Fastnet Rock has also sired 6 Australian black-type placegetters who have yet to break through.

They include Fast Talker (Adelaide x 2), Irish Lights (MRC Blue Diamond Preview), Lagerphone (QTC Sir Douglas Wadley St), Lovemelikearock (STC Sweet Embrace St), Miss O’Brien (VRC Talindert St) and Stryker (STC Darley Stakes).

Fastnet Rock will stand the 2009 season at Coolmore Australia for a fee of $60,500.
