Fastnet Rock kick-started what could be another big week when his fillies Rock Culture and Atlantic Jewel won at Geelong on Tuesday.

The Coolmore stallion will be double-handed with Smart Missile and Foxwedge in the G3 Run To The Rose at Rosehill this Saturday

Smart Missile (3c Fastnet Rock – Comical Smile by Comic Strip) sailed past champion colt Sepoy in the G2 Todman Stakes earlier this year but was sensationally scratched at the barriers before the Golden Slipper.

He has resumed in great order judging by a trial win on August 5.  With Glen Boss aboard, the Fastnet Rock colt coasted home by two lengths delighting his rider and trainer Anthony Cummings.  “He wasn’t out there to do anything special,” said Boss.  “I hardly moved on him and he just towed me along.

“He does it with ridiculous ease – I’m surprised how quickly he goes considering how easily he does it.  You won’t be getting me off him.”

Smart Missile was due to gallop between races at Warwick Stakes on Saturday but was thwarted when the track came up heavy.  Instead, Cummings gave him a searching workout at Randwick.

Foxwedge (3c Fastnet Rock – Forest Native by Forest Wildcat) is a last start G3 San Domenico Stakes winner and he gives Fastnet Rock an able second-stringer for the Run To The Rose and the G1 Golden Rose on September 10.

Admittedly, the handsome speedster might find Smart Missile, Helmet and Aeronautical harder to hold out than his San Domenico rivals but Foxwedge was a little burly first-up and did tire with the race in his keeping.

The John O’Shea-trained colt was resuming from a 19-week spell and was entitled to knock-up.  “They went out pretty fast and he had got away from us a little after winning his two trials.  He’s still a bit green but he travelled beautifully and let down good – it was a nice start to his preparation.

At $925,000, Foxwedge is the most expensive yearling yet by Fastnet Rock but he’s worth a good deal more than the $300,000 he’s already earned for owner Dr Edmund Bateman to date.

Alongside Smart Missile, he is Fastnet Rock’s next serious stallion prospect to join Wanted, Hinchinbrook, Rothesay and Stryker at stud.

Luskin Park breeder Paul Whelan sold a sister to Foxwedge for $600,000 at 2011 Inglis Easter yearling sale and he has another younger sister who will be nominated for Easter next year.
