Fath Fix at Epsom Downs

Westbury Farm resident Fath continues to sire a steady stream of winners in UK-Ireland and his latest northern crop includes Thursday’s Epsom Downs winner Gold Fix.

Fath has his first Westspeed foals on the ground at the Pinjarra based nursery where he stands with Startac (Theatrical) and newcomer He’s A Decoy (In The Wings).

Gold Fix (2f Fath – Gold Blended by Goldmark) won her maiden at Catterick on August 15 but was an odds-on loser at Wolverhampton a week later.  The Mick Channon trained filly fell from favour with punters and started 16-1 in the Isinglass Nursery Handicap yesterday.

“She was drawn wide at Wolverhampton and couldn’t get any cover,” Channon’s stable rep Lesley White said at Epsom.  “But she got a nice lead here and responded well.”

Gold Fix was passed-in at the 2008 Tattersalls October yearling sale.  She was bred by Rathasker Stud and is from a half-sister to Compton Bolter who won the 2003 Arc Trial (G3) at Newbury and three editions of the Churchill Stakes (LR) at Lincoln between 2000 and 2003.

Fath was a precocious type and stock from his initial northern hemisphere crops have excelled as juveniles.  They should also be suited by the slant for speed in Perth.

Fath is a son of Danzig and stood at Rathasker Stud in County Kildare before his sale to Western Australian breeder James Miorada.  He was raced by Sheikh Hamdan and won at York on debut at two before running a neck second to Primo Valentino in the G1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket.  He remained in training and won the G3 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood at four defeating Munir, Mull Of Kintyre and Reel Buddy.

Fath’s dam Desirable (Lord Gayle) and her half-sister Park Appeal (Ahonoora) both won editions of the G1 Cheveley Park Stakes.  Desirable also foaled the G1 English 1000 Guineas winner Shadayid and G2 Japan winner Dumaani.

Park Appeal is the dam of Darley sire Cape Cross who is enjoying a career-high year courtesy of his champion colt Sea The Stars.

Mick Channon trained another feature winner by Cape Cross on Thursday when Halicarnassus took the G2 Bosphorus Cup at the Veliefendi course in Turkey.

The win completed a couple of lucrative days for British-trained horses at the two-day Turkish International Racing Festival in Istanbul.  Channon also won the G2 Istanbul Trophy with Eva’s Request (Soviet Star) on Wednesday.

Halicarnassus has been on the go since the Dubai Carnival and was having his 17th run of the year.  “You can’t keep him in his box,” Channon’s son Michael said after the US $680,000 contest.  “The next day after a race he is kicking the door down.  We don’t force him to do anything.”
