Darley’s reverse shuttler Exceed And Excel sired his latest English stakes winner when Shamandar won the Dick Poole Fillies Stakes (LR) at Salisbury on Thursday.
Shamandar (2f Exceed And Excel – Sensational Mover by Theatrical) was quick to take the initiative in testing conditions and scored with something in hand. She had won her maiden at Ripon in July before near mises at Newbury in the Weatherby’s Super Sprint and St Hugh’s Stakes (LR).
The winner went under the hammer twice as a yearling at Tattersalls in February and November in 2008. But she walked through the ring both times on a vendor’s bid. Shamandar is out of a half-sister to US stakes winner Winsome and her second dam Blushing Heiress was a top-class performer in the United States.
Trainer William Haggas said the Watership Down Stud Stakes at Ascot is next on the agenda for Shamandar.
Nideeb (2c Exceed And Excel – Mantesera by In The Wings) was Exceed And Excel’s first stakes winner from his latest crop of northern hemisphere juveniles. He won the Listed Winkfield Stakes at Ascot in July and trainer Clive Brittain then targeted the colt for the G2 Royal Lodge Stakes on September 26.
Exceed And Excel sired 23 first crop winners in UK-Ireland last year and his current team of two year-olds should top that tally this term with 19 winners already on the board.
He is currently second on the second crop sires’ table with 41 winners. Exceptional Art (3g Exceed And Excel – Only In Dreams by Polar Falcon) leads the charge among his three year-olds. The Dandy Nicholls trained speedster was a brilliant winner of the Beverley Bullet Sprint (LR) on August 29.
