Fighting Falcon (USA) was represented by a belated first stakes winner when Malaika plotted a $31 upset in the LR Pinjarra Cup (2300m) on Sunday.
Malaika (7m Fighting Falcon – Our Annabel by Lucratif) has won 6 races and over $268,000 for owner-breeders Tony and Kerry Cockburn. “She’s a courageous little mare,” trainer Donna Baillie said. “She’s been stakes placed twice at Ascot and deserved this win.”
The veteran mare made a mockery of the Pinjarra Cup market with a convincing victory over 2013 winner Moonlight Bay.
The Cockburns bred her from 2002 Belmont Park Cup winner Our Annabel. The mare has an unraced 2yo colt named Beau Jack (Passenger) and a yearling colt by Heytesbury sire Saxon.
Fighting Falcon (Manila) was a Group 3 winner of the Cinema Hcp at Hollywood Park in 1999. A former Heytesbury Stud resident, he sired 194 foals in six books until 2008.
His first crop produced just one city winner – Proud Falcon – and his strike-rate didn’t show much improvement in the ensuing seasons.
Heytesbury put him on the market for $20,000 in June 2009 but his days in the breeding barn were effectively numbered. ASB records indicate he died in September 2012 without siring another foal.
