Swettenham Stud graduate Modoc has grabbed last spot for the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) this Saturday.
Modoc (Haradasun) finished fourth in the G2 Pago Pago Stakes in his final lead-up to the $3.50 million showcase for two year-olds. “I thought it was a good run,” trainer Paul Perry said. “He should have finished a bit closer to the winner and he handled the heavy track which was encouraging.
Perry prepares Modoc for his wife Cassie and the Wallace family who also raced champion colt Stratum. “I don’t think I’ve had a Golden Slipper runner since Stratum won it in 2005,” he claimed. “It’s good to be in the race again.”
Swettenham won the Golden Slipper back in 1987 when Marauding carried the Sangster family’s famous green, royal blue and white colours to victory at Rosehill.
Perry paid $80,000 for Modoc at the 2013 Inglis Premier Sale but had to up the ante to $170,000 when Swettenham owner Adam Sangster offered his younger half-brother by Equiano this year.
They are from Stravinsky mare Circus Polka and she is a half-sister to G3 MVRC Tesio Stakes winner Matras. Second dam Tropical Affair (Danehill) won the 1997 Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington.
