Fillies stole the show on Day 2 of the Tattersalls October yearling sale with four of the top five lots on the leader-board.
A German-bred daughter of Galileo from Peace Time consigned by Gestut Etzean topped the bill at 600,000gns. Agent Charlie Liverton, acting for an undisclosed client, saw off John Magnier for the half-sister to G3 winner Peace Royale.
“She is from a wonderfully tough German family and is athletic with a wonderful eye,” Liverton said. “She will go to John Gosden.
Liverton was under-bidder on a 700,000gns Galileo filly on Wednesday.
A Cape Cross – Model Queen filly was next best at 500,000gns on Thursday. She was purchased by agent Charlie Gordon-Watson on behalf of Purple Moon’s owner Craig Bennett. “She will go into training with Henry Cecil,” Bennet said. “We have eight mares in foal and one is still in training with James Fanshawe.
“Cape Cross has produced two of the best runners in the last five years in Sea The Stars and Ouija Board. I think he is an underrated sire and does not get the credit he deserves.”
The filly’s dam Model Queen (Kingmambo) has also foaled Group winners Regal Parade and Entifaadha. She was purchased as a broodmare prospect by Harry Herbert and his sister Lady Carolyn Warren for 92,000gns in 2000. Since then her sale ring earnings have reached 2.82 million guineas.
The third highest priced lot for the day was the Oasis Dream filly out of the Barathea mare Politesse who was consigned by David and Dianne Nagle’s Barronstown Stud. The half-sister to the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest winner King’s Apostle was knocked down to agent Amanda Skiffington.
“I thought she was the nicest filly in the sale,” said Skiffington. “She has been bought for Gretchen and Roy Jackson of Lael Stable.”
The filly will stay in Newmarket and go into training with William Haggas who trained the smart sprinters Enticing and Superstar Leo for the same owners.
A total of 123 lots changed hands on Thursday for 15.79 million guineas. The average was up 14% to 128,431 guineas and the clearance rate improved to 87%.
Friday is the final session of Book 1 at the Tattersalls October yearling sale. Book 2 is scheduled for October 11 to 13 and Book 3 is on October 14.
