Rising star Guiseppina (NZ) will be on trial for the G1 Myer Classic at Flemington when she runs in the G3 Taranaki Breeders Stakes (1400m) at Hawera on Saturday.
A homebred for Peter and Philip Vela, she has won four of eight starts and was last seen flashing home for second at Hastings when resuming from a spell.
Guiseppina split Imani (Eltawaasul) and Twilight Savings (Secret Savings). The other two franked the form in the Traderacks Stakes last Saturday – Twilight Savings won the race while Imani finished third.’
Guiseppina (4m Johar – Battocchi by Success Express) has suffered a several setbacks but has always shown she is top class. “I’m really happy with her,” trainer Steven Ramsay said. “But if it’s wet, she will be staying home.”
The Velas want black-type for the lightly-raced mare before she retires to Pencarrow Stud. She is still untapped and, given the right track conditions, can make up for lost time through injuries.
Guiseppina’s dam Battocchi was a G1 winner of the VRC Matriarch Stakes at Flemington and her latest to race is the Darci Brahma gelding Micken who was a debut winner at Timaru in June.
Darci Brahma is a son of Danehill from Grand Echezeaux. His dam won a G1 Australasian Oaks racing in the blue and white hooped colours of the Vela brothers.
Our Ella Belle (Encosta de Lago) is another Pencarrow bound mare searching for black-type in the Listed Matamata Cup on Saturday.
