Darley sire Gonski was represented by his first winner when Czechout Girl scored a long neck victory in the Mitavite 2YO Maiden at Te Rapa on Sunday.
Czechout Girl (2f Gonski – Tongaporutu by McGinty) is prepared by Byerley Park based trainer Ben Foote. She was handy throughout and received the breaks at the right time to defeat Anabandana (Anabaa) and Know When To Hold (Exceed And Excel).
The filly had been scratched from the Listed Murdoch Newell 2yo Stakes at Pukekohe the previous day and was surprisingly sent out at double figure odds 24 hours later.
Czechout Girl was bred by Hudson Rees Ltd and is the first winner for Tongaporutu, an unraced half-sister to G3 winner Tangarakau. Her Te Rapa winner was an $8,000 buy from Oxford Thoroughbreds at the 2010 NZ Bloodstock Festival yearling sale.
Gonski (Danehill) was bred by Swettenham Stud and he defeated no fewer than nine Group 1 winners throughout his career. He was rated within four points of champion colt Stratum after a wide-margin Rosehill juvenile victory.
At three, he won the VRC Listed Concept Sports Stakes at Flemington before retiring to stud in 2007. He stands at Darley’s Northwood Park base in Victoria for a $6,600 fee.
