First stakes winner for Artie Schiller

Independent Stallions shuttler Artie Schiller sired his first stakes winner on Sunday when Anne’s Beauty prevailed in an exciting finish to the Listed Glorious Song Stakes at Woodbine.

Anne’s Beauty (2f Artie Schiller – Lucky Streak by Sea Wall) defeated odds-on favourite Nina Fever by a short-head after they put eight lengths on the rest of the field in the straight.

Trainer Paul Attard said the win was a consolation for the Artie Schiller filly after she was scratched at the barrier before the Mazarine Stakes at Woodbine last month.  “She was acting up that day,” Attard said.  “She got a lot of gate schooling and was much more professional this time.”

Anne’s Beauty was a $30,000 buy at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale.  Her dam Lucky Streak is a winning half-sister to stakes winners First Tea and Asher.

Attard had produced her to win second time out at Woodbine in August.  She is one of 10 winners from Artie Schiller’s first northern crop.  He has sired another 11 placegetters from a total of 38 starters.

Artie Schiller shuttles from Pauls Mill in Kentucky and he completed a winning double in New York on the weekend.

Independent Stallions studmaster Mike Becker received a call from Pauls Mill manager Ben Waldren with news that Artie Schiller filly Parting Words had beaten a hot field at Aqueduct on Sunday.

“Ben phoned in the middle of the night but you take those calls any time,” Becker said.  “She beat a field loaded with some highly-regarded youngsters by about three lengths.”

Parting Words (2f Artie Schiller – Lost Love by Lost Code) is raced by Lael Stables and is prepared by Barclay Tagg who is best known as the trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide.  She is a half-sister to the stakes winners I Love Silver (Silver Ghost) and The Max (Point Given).

Artie Schiller (El Prado) was a Group 1 winner of the 2005 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Belmont and amassed $2.08 million in earnings from a 22: 10-5-3 career card.

His initial southern yearlings were offered at this year’s majors and averaged $43,132 off a 2008 service fee of $20,000.  Highest price was a $165,000 for a colt bred by Bob Scarborough at the Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Artie Schiller averaged books of 90 mares in his first three seasons shuttling from Pauls Mill to Independent Stallions.  He is having a break from shuttling this year but will return to Victoria in 2011.
