Without A Pop has notched the first win for former Victorian Group 1 performer Big Poppa Pump.
The five year-old mare won the Connolly Williams Memorial Maiden (1400m) at King Island on Saturday for local trainer Robert Keys. She was racing first-up after a midfield finish at Mildura in July.
Without A Pop (5m Big Poppa Pump – Without A Mill by Kingston Mill) was bred by Hamilton based Maggie Cumming of Carin Park Stud and is a younger half-sister to Mornin’ Sam (Musee D’Orsay) who has won races at Morphettville (3) and Gawler (2).
Big Poppa Pump (Charnwood Forest) was trained by Denis Daffy at Camperdown for wins at Sandown and Moonee Valley as well as finishing runner-up to Barely A Moment in the G1 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes.
“He stood at Carin Park and then transferred to Glenormiston Lodge,” Daffy recalled. “When they closed the College he moved to a property up at St Arnaud but died from a snake bite about twelve months ago.
“Big Poppa Pump was a beautiful looking individual and could have won awards at the Royal Melbourne Show. I have a half-dozen untried young horses by him. They’re magnificent types but I’m getting on and can’t look after all of them. I would be happy to hear from anyone wanting to make an offer or to come down for an inspection.”
