Magic breed from Swettenham Stud

Moonee Valley winner Marli Magic has a pedigree that’s produced top-class gallopers for Swettenham Stud’s Sangster family going back to Group 1 champion Pure Of Heart.

Marli Magic was a $50,000 graduate from Adam Sangster’s Inglis Premier draft in 2012 and Saturday’s victory in the 1Print Hcp (1500m) increased her earnings to $196,305 including $31,000 in Super VOBIS bonuses.

Trainer John Sadler prepares the mare for a syndicate that includes his sister Helen and Aquanita Racing’s media manager Rob Gaylard.  She led from start to finish but plotted a wide course in front under Jessica Payne.

“John told me to stay off the fence and it paid off,” the 3kg apprentice said.  “She didn’t get much of a breather throughout the race so it was a very tough effort.”

Marli Magic is by former Swettenham resident Host (Chi) from Unlimited Passage (Giant’s Causeway).  Her younger brother Hong Kong Captain is about to begin his new career for David Hall in Hong Kong after winning this year’s $150,000 VOBIS Gold Star at Moonee Valley.

Unlimited Passage is a half-sister to Swettenham-bred stakes winners Recast (G1 Singapore Gold Cup) and Gonski (LR Poseidon Stakes).  The SC1 brand has also been carried to stakes wins by family members Schubert, Downhill Racer, Pinezero, Idol Worship, Happy Giggle, et al.

They descend from G1 Falmouth Stakes winner River Dane and her sister Pure Of Heart who carried Robert Sangster’s silks to a Group 1 victory in the 1982 George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill.
