Rayos was the first leg of a winning quartet for Grenville Stud stallions at Launceston on Sunday and he was also the first winner for resident sire My Lad.
The other winners by Grenville sires were Rafiq (Partners Choice) Our Magic Boy (West Quest) and Lavaca (West Quest). It was appropriate rising star Lavaca should win the closing event because he is trained by Grenville studmaster Graeme McCulloch.
Rayos (3g My Lad – Fasig by West Quest) is trained at Deloraine by Terry Roles and had been runner-up on debut at Devonport last month. He scored by a head under leading hoop Brendan McCoull.
My Lad (Southern Halo) won 9 races from 20 starts in Argentina including the Group 1 La Plata G.P. Ciudad de La Plata. His first winner is from Fasig who was owned by McCulloch and his wife Christine. Second dam Taniety (Theus) was a winning half-sister to G3 Hobart Cup winner Southern States (Exit Five B).
Lavaca (4h West Quest – Silver Wire by Double Income) won his sixth race in a row and will start favourite in next month’s Tasmanian Newmarket Handicap. He defeated Tasmanian Guineas winner Lyell (tough Speed) by more than two lengths at his first attempt in open company.
