Hocus Pocus (NZ) made a dream debut at Wanganui on Saturday to launched the winning career of her sire Per Incanto (USA).
Gerald Innes trained filly scored by a half-neck from the favourite Serena Miss (Iffraaj) in the Veandercross Juvenile Plate (800m). “I was keen after breaking her in,” Innes said. “She was run off her today but cornered well – she’s quite exciting.”
Hocus Pocus (2f Per Incanto – Little Hazel by Black Minnaloushe) is out of a half-sister to LR Cranbourne Cup winner Starmon but didn’t make a $3,000 reserve at the NZB South Island yearling sale in April.
“Little Avondale didn’t get offered a lot of money so we agreed on a deal,” Innes said. “I’m very pleased for Sam Williams down at Little Avondale.”
Williams has been standing Per Incanto at his Masterton base since 2011.
Per Incanto (Street Cry – Pappa Reale by won two juvenile events in Rome and returned at the following year to win in Rome and Milan before completing a hat-trick in the G3 Premio Tudini back at Rome’s Capannelle circuit.
Named Champion Italian 3YO Sprinter in 2007, he was subsequently purchased by Shadwell Stud but injury kept him winless until he scored over 1400m at Aqueduct as a five year-old.
Darley champion Street Cry sired him from Italian Sprint Champion Papa Reale (Indian Ridge). She has been equally proficient at stud having left a second Champion Italian Sprinter Patapan (Stravinsky) who is based at Belmont Park in Timaru.
Per Incanto bears a close physical resemblance to his own sire and is an outstanding looking individual standing 16.1 hands. He stands for a $5,000 fee alongside former Darley sire Nadeem at Little Avondale Stud.
