Gai Waterhouse has always ranked Muscovado a highly promising filly and she’s beginning to back that up following a winter spell.
Muscovado (3f Big Brown – On Type by Zeditave) won a Kembla Grange maiden last month and handled the rise in grade like a real professional in the Senpos Da Vinci Hcp (1300m) at Wyong on Friday
The filly had been unplaced twice earlier this year in Group 3 nurseries at Randwick and Flemington. “She has taken time to mature,” Gai’s stable foreman Ranjet Singh said. “We think she is very smart and will be even better next preparation.”
The Big Brown filly was a $120,000 buy for Star Thoroughbreds at the 2013 Gold Coast Magic Millions. Her dam On Type gave owner John Singleton Group 2 wins in the Surround, Shannon and Premiere Stakes.
“We were thrilled to see Muscovado win,” Star Thoroughbreds manager Denise Martin said. “She is raced by an ‘all girls’ syndicate and is cleverly named. Her older half sister Sugar Babe won stakes races at Caulfield and Muscovado is a type of brown sugar!”
On Type’s final foal is a Big Brown 2yo filly named Sugar Hit with Eagle Farm trainer Liam Birchley.
Big Brown is a Top 10 third-season sire in USA with 48 winners of $2.38 million this year. His American-bred, Irish-based Group 1 performer Darwin holds September nominations for the G2 Park Stakes at Doncaster and G2 Boomerang Stakes at Leopardstown.
Big Brown (USA) shuttles to Vinery for a $16,500 (inc gst) service fee.
