Rich Hill Stud stallion Sir Percy made a dream start to his career in England on Monday when his first starter Percy Jackson coasted home at Bath.
Percy Jackson (2c Sir Percy – Fly In Style by Hernando) was heavily backed into favouritism and the market mover delivered in style under jockey Eddie Ahern. He is trained at Lambourn by Denis Coakley who said the youngster’s victory came as no surprise and he expected him to keep improving over more ground than 1100m.
“I’m not sure if Ascot is on the cards,” Coakley said. “He did it very easy and is by Sir Percy so that was as short as he wants to go. He had been showing us plenty at home and the owners backed him, which is always nice.”
Sir Percy was an outstanding juvenile winning the G1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket and the G2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood to remain unbeaten in four two-year-old appearances.
He was trained by Marcus Tregoning and was the highest ranked English 2YO in 2005 with a Timeform rating of 122.
In his first start back at three, Sir Percy was runner-up in the G1 English 2000 Guineas and subsequently defeated Dylan Thomas in the G1 English Derby. He joined an elite group of only six horses – Nijinsky and Mill Reef among them – to complete the Dewhurst – Derby double in the last 40 years.
Sir Percy stands at Lanwades Stud in Newmarket and has shuttled to Rich Hill Stud in New Zealand since 2009. He stands at a fee of $15,000 (+ gst) and his sole first-crop representative at the recent NZB National weanling sale realised $56,000.
