Stratum sired his first winner when Rose of Scotland prevailed at Launceston on Monday. The Widden Stud freshman had already sired the black-type performers Pellizotti and Crystal Lily before breaking the ice at Mowbray.
Rose of Scotland (2f Stratum – Ares De Lago by Encosta De Lago) got home to beat Batoka Sky by a length. She is trained by Charlie Goggin for Joe O’Neill’s Prime Thoroughbreds syndicate.
Stratum (Redoute’s Choice) was purchased by Paul Perry at the Gold Coast Magic Millions for $320,000 and went on to win a Golden Slipper at Rosehill.
A resident of Widden Stud in the Hunter Valley, Stratum over won $2.24 million prior to being retired. He also won the G2 Pago Pago Stakes.
O’Neill went to $47,500 to secure the filly from the draft of Kambula Stud at the 2009 Adelaide Magic Millions. She is closely related to G1 winning filly Mnemosyne (MRC Thousand Guineas & STC Queen of the Turf ).
Stratum has 50 lots set to go under the hammer at next month’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Highlights of his draft include (at least) half relations to stakes performers Carlton Spirit, Lady Cay, Uber, Questing New, A Country Girl and Encosta Tszyu.
His yearlings are from such mares as stakes winners Golden Delicious, Loving New, Bridie Belle, Sister Patricia and Verdict Declared.
He is also represented by a filly at the Perth Yearling Sale in January bred and the same cross as Rose of Scotland – from a Flemington winner by Encosta de Lago.
