Keeneland’s 2010 January Sale this week will include the first northern hemisphere yearlings by Darley shuttlers Any Given Saturday, Hard Spun and Street Sense.

The trio flew back to Kentucky on December 27 after completing their second southern shuttle – Any Given Saturday and Hard Spun were based at Northwood Park in Victoria while Street Sense stood at Kelvinside in NSW.

Any Given Saturday (Distorted Humor) has six new-season yearlings entered for Keeneland headed by a filly from Biogio’s Rose (Lot 129).  The dam is by Polish Numbers and she won 16 races headed by a pair of G3 events at Belmont and the Listed New York Oaks at Finger Lakes.

Another prolific winner with an Any Given Saturday filly is Plaid (Lot 705).  The Deputy Commander mare won 13 races including the Listed Chaves County Stakes.

Any Given Saturday was a G1 winner of the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park and his first Australian book comprised 107 mares at $22,000 in 2008.  He was just as popular last year when the fee was reduced to $13,750.

Hard Spun (Danzig) has four Keeneland entrants starting with the half-sister to Megans Bluff (Pine Bluff), a four-time G3 winner at Arlington.  Her first foal to race is Elusive Bluff (Elusive Quality) who won the 2008 Pilgrim Stakes (G3) at Belmont.

Hard Spun was a G1 winner of the King’s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga before retiring to stud with earnings of $2.67 million.  He served 121 southern mares at $33,000 in 2008.  He topped the century again last year.

Street Sense (Street Cry) has four yearlings going under the hammer at Keeneland.  Lot 88 is a colt from Argentine bred mare Venusberg, a G1 winner as a 2YO in her homeland.  She also won in the United States at five.

Lot 605 is a Street Sense colt from Luv A Drama (Behrens) and he is a three-quarter brother to Tomcito (Street Cry) who was the Champion 3yo colt of his year in Peru.  The colt is also closely related to Taunton Vale’s G1 winning sire Numerous Times.

Street Sense was the first horse to complete the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile- Kentucky Derby double in 2006-7.  He was an even bigger money-spinner for Darley in 2008 with 131 mares at $55,000.  The cost of a cover to him dipped to $38,500 in 2009.

Keeneland’s 2010 January Sale will commence on Monday and the last of the 1,753 horses catalogued will sell on Friday.  The auction comprises 730 broodmares, 691 yearlings, 254 racing or broodmare prospects, 77 horses of racing age, and one share in Monarchos.

“The January Sale offers a particularly good selection of yearlings,” Keeneland Director Geoffrey Russell said.  “Given the strength of November weanling sales, it will provide another opportunity for the market to move forward as the industry continues to adjust to the new market reality.”
