Lynward Park sire Balmont has his first yearlings catalogued for the 2011 Perth Magic Millions and his own family maintained its perfect record when Wear Red won her maiden at Tampa Bay Downs in Florida on Boxing Day.

Wear Red (Henny Hughes) is the third winner from the winning Seattle Slew mare Aldebaran.  Her only other foals to race are Group 1 winners Balmont (Stravinsky) and Eskendereya (Giant’s Causeway).

Wear Red is trained by Bill Mott for Kentucky owner-breeder Sanford Robertson.  She settled in fourth place on the fence and, when angled into clear space by Cornelio Velasquez, flew past front-runner Ms Lydian to score by 1.5 lengths.  She was going better than anything else at the end of 1600m on turf and Daily Racing Form reported she could have increased the margin if extended.

The winner is by Darley shuttler Henny Hughes (Storm Cat) who has now sired 20 first-crop juvenile winners in North America this year.

Balmont shuttles to Lynward Park from Tara Stud in County Meath.  His first European two year-olds were off the mark this year when Danube Dancer won at Warwick in May.  His second winner arrived when Silver Age saluted at Kempton on December 16.

Trained by Jeremy Nosada, Balmont was a top-class juvenile winning the 2003 G1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket and G2 Gimcrack Stakes at York.  As an older horse, he was G1 placed in the 2004 G1 July Cup and 2005 G1 Golden Jubilee Stakes.

His younger half-brother Eskendereya (Giant’s Causeway) was pre-post favourite for this year’s Kentucky Derby after runaway lead-up wins in the G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes (8 lengths) and the G1 Wood Memorial (9 lengths).

Sadly, he was sidelined shortly before the Run for the Roses after sustaining soft-tissue damage to his near foreleg.  It was subsequently diagnosed as a career-ending injury and he will commence stud duties at Taylor Made Stallions in Kentucky for a $30,000 fee in 2011.
