Frankel was named 2012 Horse of the Year at the Cartier Awards in London on Tuesday. He joins Ouija Board as the only two-time winner of the Award.
The undefeated Galileo colt was trained by Sir Henry Cecil for owner-breeder Prince Khalid Abdullah. “All of us at Warren Place are thrilled that Frankel’s achievements have been recognized with this most prestigious award for the second time running,” Cecil said. “Frankel has been a great ambassador for British racing and has captured the hearts of so many people.
“Thank you Frankel and to everyone that has voted for him.” Cecil is being treated for stomach cancer and was not well enough to attend Tuesday’s ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel.
Frankel triumphed over three-time classic winner Camelot, Cirrus Des Aigles, Excelebration, and Nathaniel.
Australian-based G1 Golden Jubilee Stakes winner Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) won the Cartier Sprinter award, albeit narrowly, from G1 July Cup winner Mayson (Invincible Spirit).
Coolmore colt Camelot (Montjeu) always held sway for the Cartier 3YO Colt Award while G1 Nassau Stakes winner The Fugue (Dansili) won the 3YO Filly Award for owner-breeders Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber.
Unbeaten colt Dawn Approach (New Approach) is the 2YO Colt winner and Certify (Elusive Quality) the Champion 2YO Filly.
Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup winner Colour Vision (Rainbow Quest) was honoured as Cartier’s Champion Stayer.
