Fat Al delivered a seventh Group 1 victory in the Epsom Hcp for Gai Waterhouse at Randwick on Saturday. The lightly-raced gelding enabled Gai to equal the Epsom record her father Tommy Smith.
Fat Al (4g Al Maher – Fatoon by Snaadee) bounced straight to front and showed a strong turn of foot to beat Darley galloper Ambidexter. “He defied them,” Waterhouse beamed. “The horse was outstanding. Good on him, go Fat Al.”
A bargain $27,000 purchase from the draft of Emirates Park at the 2010 Inglis Easter yearling sale, Fat Al won the Albury Guineas in March and has now earned more than $650,000 in prizemoney. His connections include Gai’s daughter Kate.
Al Maher (Danehill) stands at Emirates Park and his dam Fatoon won the G2 Reisling Slipper Trial and G3 Sapphire Stakes. She is a half-sister to Emirates sire Mutawaajid (Redoute’s Choice).
Fat Al’s yearling brother made $160,000 at this year’s Inglis Easter yearling sale.
