Champion sire Galileo has towered over the European classics this season and he’s already gearing up for another bumper year in 2012.
The Coolmore stallion was in the spotlight again at the Curragh on Sunday with Ballydoyle fillies Maybe and Was.
Maybe (2f Galileo – Sumora by Danehill) stretched her unbeaten record to four in the G2 Debutante Stakes. She began the winning run at Naas in May and followed up in the LR Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and the G3 Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown.
Maybe will be aimed at the G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes back at the Curragh on August 28. She is already a 7-2 pre-post favourite for the 2012 English 1000 Guineas.
Her stablemate Was couldn’t have been more impressive on debut in a 1600m maiden. The newcomer tracked the leaders under stable apprentice Joseph O’Brien and made easy headway for a convincing two-length victory.
Was (2f Galileo – Alluring Park by Green Desert) cost 1,200,000 guineas at the 2010 Tattersalls October yearling sale and was immediately priced at 25-1 for the 2012 English Oaks. She is closely related to Galileo’s 2008 English Derby winner New Approach.
Classic winners by Galileo this year include superstar colt Frankel (English 2000 Guineas), Roderic O’Connor (Irish 2000 Guineas), Misty For Me (Irish 1000 Guineas), Treasure Beach (Irish Derby) and Golden Lilac (French 1000 Guineas & French Oaks).
