A fortnight after Frankel captured worldwide attention at Newmarket, Coolmore great Galileo sired another classic winner when Golden Lilac powered home in the French 1000 Guineas on Sunday.
Frankel maintained his unbeaten record with a breathtaking victory in the English 2000 Guineas and Golden Lilac is also perfect after four outings.
Golden Lilac (3f Galileo – Grey Lilas by Danehill) outclassed her rivals in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp on Sunday. “That was brilliant,” Gestut Ammerland owner-breeder Dietrich von Boetticher declared. “The natural step is the Prix de Diane and there’s no reason why she can’t go on to the Arc.”
The Andre Fabre trained filly, who is bred on the same Galileo – Danehill cross as Frankel, dismissed her rivals even though she refused to settle for Olivier Peslier in the early stages. Pacemaker Glorious Sight (Singspiel) held on for second ahead of Coolmore filly Wild Wind (Danehill Dancer).
Golden Lilac had won two late season juvenile contests at Saint Cloud at two and resumed with a G3 victory in the Prix de la Grotte at Longchamp in April. von Boetticher also raced her dam Grey Lilas who was runner-up in the 2004 French 1000 Guineas en route to a G1 victory over the colts in the Prix du Moulin.
Gestut Ammerland and Fabre dominated the French classics with homebred colt Lope De Vega last year. The Shamardal star won the French 2000 Guineas – Derby double and will cover his first southern book at Patinack Farm this spring.
Wootton Bassett surrendered his unbeaten record in the French 2000 Guineas behind upset winner Tin Horse at Longchamp on Sunday.
Tin Horse (3c Sakhee – Joyeuse Entree by Kendor) came with a well-timed run to swamp Wootton Bassett in the closing stages of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains. Placegetters Home Havane Smoker (Dubawi) and Venomous (Red Ransom) made it a clean-sweep for the French connection.
Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) used up too much petrol crossing to the lead from a high draw and was a spent force at the furlong.
Tin Horse was beaten over two lengths by Wootton Bassett in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in October but gained revenge under a crafty Thierry Jarnet ride
His sire Sahkee (Bahri) was a G1 winner of the Arc de Triomphe and Juddmonte International before retiring to Sheikh Hamdan’s Nunnery Stud.
Tin Horse is the final foal of G3 Longchamp Prix d’Aumale winner Joyeuse Entrée. His older half-sister to Becomes You (Lomitas) was a Listed winner of the Criterium de l’Ouest.
Owner-breeder Marquesa de Moratalla indicated Tin Horse will front up to Frankel in the St James’s Palace Stakes next month.
