Galileo towers above Tattersalls Sale

Champion sire Galileo towered above the Tattersalls October Sale on Wednesday when five of his yearlings topped the leader-board for a combined 5.57 million guineas.

The most expensive during Day 2 of Book 1 was the 1.50 million guineas sister to English Oaks winner Was.  Purchased by Mandore International, the filly is out of Alluring Park who is a half-sister to Galileo’s English Derby winner New Approach.

Next best was a Galileo sister to G1 winner Together bought by Coolmore Stud’s John Magnier for 1.30 million guineas.  “She’s a lovely filly from the family we know well,” Coolmore agent Demi O’Byrne said.  “I saw her at the farm before she came here and she’s quite similar to Together.  I thought she was the best filly in the sale.  I wasn’t surprised she made around that.”

The strength of Galileo’s international appeal was well-summarised by Grant Pritchard-Gordon who was also on the sister to Together.  “We were specifically looking for a Galileo filly,” he said.  “He’s certainly the best stallion I’ll ever see in my lifetime and he’s got off to a tremendous start as a broodmare sire.”

Magnier also paid 950,000gns for a Galileo colt from brilliant Irish mare Alexander Goldrun.  And a Galileo sister to Irish 2000 Guineas winner Roderic O’Connor made 925,000gns to the bid of Blandford Bloodstock’s Tom Goff.

Goff said the Swettenham Stud-bred filly is for a long-standing client.  “I saw her first thing yesterday morning and fell in love with her,” Goff said.  “She’s absolutely outstanding and very mature for a May foal.  I could watch her all day.”

Australian buyer Paul Fudge weighed for the fifth Galileo when he paid 900,000gns for the filly from Witch Of Fife.

Tattersalls reported 140 lots changed hands on Day 2 and they grossed 25.02 million guineas.  The average jumped 39% to 178,729gns and the median was up 13% to 112,500gns compared to the same session last year.

Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Sale concludes on Thursday.  Book 2 runs from October 15 to 18 and Book 3 will be conducted on October 19.
