Geiger Counter still Smokin’

Arrowfield champion Geiger Counter died way back in September 2000 but he bobbed up again when He’s Smokin’ scored at Esperance in Western Australia on Friday.

Geiger Counter (Mr Prospector) covered 8 books in Australia.  He initially shuttled from North America before John Messara stood him on a permanent basis at Arrowfield and Chatswood Stud.

He’s Smokin’ (11g Geiger Counter – Hot Tropics by Rivotious) has been a perennial money-spinner since winning a Geelong maiden for Dianne and Sally Wynne in September 2003.  He also won at Warwick Farm with Darren Beadman aboard in November 2004 before transferring to WA.

He doubled up at Ascot after arriving in Perth and found the line again lumping 59kg in the Hahn Super Dry Hcp on Friday.  “He thinks he a three year-old!” trainer Justin Parsons said from his Tenterden stables on Saturday morning.  “I bought him off the internet for $7,000 and he’s earned more than $200,000 for us over here.”

Parsons will set He’s Smokin’ for the Esperance Cup on March 3.  “He’s a happy horse and just loves racing.  He won over 1600 metres on Friday so hopefully we can get out to 2000 metres in the Cup.”

Geiger Counter got He’s Smokin’ in his final crop.  His only other galloper still on the go is Newcastle based veteran Geigeron whose last win was in the 2010 Inverell Cup.

Worldwide, Geiger Counter has sired 478 winners of 2092 races at an astounding 78% strike-rate.  In Australia, his Group 1 winners ranged from Restive in an Oakleigh Plate (1100m) to Gold Guru in an AJC Australian Derby (2400m).

His most successful sire son in Australia has been deceased Lyndhurst Stud sire Canadian Silver (Can).  His only active sons in Australia are Oamaru Force (Noor Elaine Farm) and Count Albrecht (Bella Park).

Geiger Counter is the damsire of 10 stakes winners in Australia and NZ including last-start G3 Vo Rogue Stakes winner Punch On.  The Tiger Hill filly is one of the favourites for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
