Geordieland retired after Goodwood Cup

Geordieland has been retired after pulling up sore in the Goodwood Cup on Thursday.  He aggravated a leg injury that had kept him off the track for nearly two years.

Geordieland (10h Johann Quatz – Aerdee by Highest Honor) was one of the fancies for the 2006 Melbourne Cup under Frankie Dettori but bled during a race dominated by Japanese stayers Delta Blues and Pop Rock.

“He’s been a wonderful fella to have around the stable,” trainer Jamie Osborne said.  “He gave us some fantastic days.”

Geordieland arrived in Britain from France after winning the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly.  He went on to a G2 victory in the Yorkshire Cup and also finishing runner-up to Yeats in the Ascot Gold Cup in 2007 and 2008.

Osborne is hopeful that Geordieland will get a chance at stud.  “I would like to think there’s a job for him, perhaps in France as a National Hunt stallion.  He’s always been a seriously talented horse.”
