Veteran sprinter-miler (King) Mufhasa (NZ) continues to surprise trainer Bruce Wallace with his energy and zest for work.
The former New Zealand Horse of the Year was a runaway winner at the Avondale trials last week and that’s put him in the frame for a range of options both at home and away to add to his collection of 10 Group 1 triumphs.
“I’ve never in all my years – and I’ve had a few good ones – had a horse like him that loves trackwork so much,” Wallace said. “He strides to the track and back and can’t wait to work – I can’t see any reason why he can’t carry on racing at Group 1 level.
“His joints are the best they’ve been since I’ve had him and leg-wise and feet-wise he’s great. He’s just such a racehorse.”
Wallace said the Group 1 George Main Stakes at Randwick on September 21 and the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield on the same day were options being considered for the gelding.
“There is a race at home on the same day but the George Main looks likely. The tracks in New Zealand are still too wet.”
(King) Mufhasa (9g Pentire – Sheila Cheval by Mi Preferido) was bred and sold by Rich Hill Stud for $50,000 at the 2006 NZ Bloodstock Select Sale. He has earned over $2.84 million for owners David, Simon and Natalie Archer and Diane Wright.
His roll-call of 10 Group 1 victories started in 2009 with the Waikato Draught Sprint & Telegraph Hcp and continued with the 2010 Otaki Maori Stakes, 2011 Mudgway Stakes, Toorak Hcp, Waikato Draught Sprint, Captain Cook Stakes, Telegraph Hcp, 2012 Futurity Stakes and Windsor Park Plate.
