Flying Spur mare The Glitzy One ended her current preparation with a last-stride victory in the Great Autumn Hcp (2500m) at Riccarton on Saturday.
The Glitzy One (4m Flying Spur – The Jewel by O’Reilly) worked into the clear for rider Jay Misbah and arrived in time to defeat Lisa Love (Generous) and Aussieaussieaussie (D’Cash) in a close finish.
“She will go out for a winter break at the top of her game,” Wingatui trainer Steve Anderton said. “She’s has to get rolling early and Jay did a good job. He comes over to ride her every morning.”
The Glitzy One is a homebred for the Dennis brothers – Tony, Ray, Martin and Joe- and she is a daughter of their mare The Jewel (O’Reilly) who was a G1 winner of the NZ 1000 Guineas and Waikato International.
The Jewel is a half-sister to G2 Travis Stakes winner Star Affair (Star Way) and G3 VRC Danehill Stakes winner The One (O’Reilly). Their extended family includes the G1 winning brothers The Phantom Chance and The Phantom.
The Glitzy One is the first foal of The Jewel and she has won four races and also earned black-type in the 2011 LR Otago Breeders’ Stakes. “She’s obviously not as good as her mother,” Anderton said. “But she has got a bit of her heart.”
The Dennis family catalogued a Fastnet Rock – The Jewel colt at the 2012 NZB Karaka yearling sale but bidding failed to reach a $490,000 reserve. The mare is in foal to Thorn Park.
Arrowfield champion Flying Spur has a tip-top record in New Zealand. Five of his 23 winners across the Tasman have scored at black type level – San Luis (G1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce), Flying Babe (G2 Matamata Breeders St), Velasco (G2 Duke of Bedford St), Flying Fulton (LR Great Northern Foal St) and Spur Bird (LR Gore Guineas).
