Yarradale Stud sire Heritage can sire another feature winner at the Kalgoorlie carnival this month with Ancient Spell.
The Steve Wolfe trained galloper booked a trip to the Goldfields with a last-start victory in the Irish Day Luncheon Hcp (1600m) at Belmont. His immediate target is the $110,000 LR Boulder Cup (1760m) on September 16.
Heritage gelding Defy Me won four races in a row in Kal last year including the Goldfields Tattersalls Cup.
Ancient Spell (5g Heritage – Euphoriant by Barathea) benefited from a well-timed ride in front from Shaun Mc Gruddy at Belmont last Saturday. “Shaun reckons he’s much better leading and after that win I have to agree,” Wolfe said. “He would have won a lot more races but for bad barriers.”
Ancient Spell has won 6 races and been placed 10 times for earnings of $140,000. He is raced by Yarradale owner Ron Sayers in partnership with Wolfe, Tony Patrizi and Peter Bartlett.
“He’s no superstar but a nice, genuine horse,” Wolfe added. “I don’t think he will have any problems stretching out in the Boulder Cup.”
Ancient Spell’s dam Euphoriant is an unraced daughter of G1 AJC Champagne Stakes winner Euphoria (Marauding). They’re direct descendants of Denise’s Joy who rates as one of Australia’s greatest matriarchs.
Heritage is the only son of Flying Spur standing in Western Australia and his dam is a sister to Northerly. He is standing for a $4,400 (inc gst) service fee at Yarradale Stud.
