Goldikova was denied another Group 1 in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville on Monday.  The Champion mare was aiming for her 15th win at the elite level but was beaten a length by Pivotal filly Immortal Verse.

Goldikova (Anabaa) was not helped by her wide draw and Olivier Peslier was left with little option but to drop her in towards the rear of the field.  She was forced wide when asked for an effort but couldn’t match Immortal Verse who was coming off a G1 victory in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Goldikova had won the Prix Jacques le Marois in 2009 but was beaten by Makfi in the 2010 edition.

She had made history last time out in the Prix Rothschild.  It was her fourth consecutive win in that event and she became the first in France to accomplish that feat since the European Pattern system was introduced in 1971.

Goldikova was bred in Ireland by Alain and Gerard Wertheimer.  She is by the deceased French stallion Anabaa and hails from the immediate female family of French champion Gold River.

Her younger half-sister Galikova gave connections a winning start to the day in the G2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville.

Galikova (Galileo) has won three of her four starts this year and trainer Freddie Head will now set her for the Prix Vermeille on the way to the Arc de Triomphe.  She firmed into 10-1 for the Longchamp signature in October.

Galikova’s only defeat this year came in the French Oaks when she was beaten by Galileo filly Golden Lilac.
