Group 1 No.17 for Winx

Winx stands alone as the most winning Group 1 flat racehorse in the world after putting her rivals to the sword in the G1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill.

The Street Cry mare became the first horse to win three straight George Ryder Stakes and surpassed American champion John Henry as the most successful flat galloper of all time with 17 Group 1 victories.

The record-breaking win saw Winx’s earnings race past $16.56 million and confirmed her status as the world’s highest-ranked galloper.

While the focus will now switch to an expected announcement on her long-term future and possible trip to Royal Ascot, Saturday was all about a great win in a tough contest.

Last start Group 1 winner Happy Clapper tried hard, but couldn’t hold out Winx over the concluding stages as the superstar stretched away to win by three-quarters of a length.  Highly-fancied three-year-old Kementari, coming off an easy Group 1 win, was third home.

“They are two quality horses and made her stretch,” trainer Chris Waller said.  “That was perfect for where we are heading, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in three weeks time.”

Winx is raced by Peter Tighe’s Magic Bloodstock Racing along with friends Richard Treweeke and Debbie Kepitis.  She was purchased by Magic Bloodstock for $230,000 at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Coolmore Stud, as agent for Fairway Thoroughbreds.
