Coolmore shuttler Oratorio sired his first Group 1 winner in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday and he did it in style when his colts Beethoven and Fencing Master filled the quinella in England’s equivalent of the Golden Slipper.

Beethoven (2c Oratorio  – Queen Titi by Sadler´s Wells) had been on the go since May and the Dewhurst was his second win in 10 starts.

“We put a visor on to sharpen him up,” trainer Aidan O’Brien said.  “He’s a very tough horse and he’s been improving all the time even if the figures don’t show that.  We might run him in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.”

It was O’Brien’s first Dewhurst win since Rock Of Gibraltar in 2001.  Beethoven’s only other win had been in a Leopardstown maiden in August but he had been placed in the G1 National Stakes and G3 Anglesey Stakes at the Curragh.

Fencing Master (2c Oratorio – Moonlight Dance by Alysheba) appeared more likely to give his sire a G1 first, however, he was overhauled by Beethoven who had made rapid progress from the rear under Ryan Moore.

Beethoven is the first foal of Queen Titi and was a 260,000 euros buy at Goffs in October 2008.  His dam was a Listed winner of the 2005 Garnet Stakes at Naas and she is from the family of Coolmore champion Henrythenavigator.

Oratorio (Ire) is a son of Danehill and was a 2yo Group 1 winner of the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.  He trained on at three to claim the G1 Eclipse Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes.

The Coolmore stallion has sired 11 juvenile winners from his first Irish-bred crop in Europe this year.  He other stakes winner is the Richard Hannon trained colt Big Audio who is a Listed winner of the Chesham Stakes at Ascot and the Stonehenge Stakes at Salisbury.

Oratorio has been well-backed to capture Australia’s leading first season title by winners this season.  He has been the medium of several large bets and has firmed into $17 with www.sportingbet.com.au.
