Headwater a perfect fit for Inglis Classic

Vinery sire Headwater is a perfect fit for astute buyers like Darby Racing at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

That was evident when his Classic graduate Ashra Jahre won with something in hand at Newcastle on Monday.  A big, long-striding filly with the scope to train on, she is exactly the type to target at the Classic Sale.

Headwater is rapidly developing into a proven winner-getter and he has 21 yearlings catalogued for this year’s Classic which commences at Riverside Stables this Sunday.

Ashra Jahre is trained by Mark Newnham after being knocked down for $80,000 at the 2019 Classic Sale.  “That will keep the boss happy,” stable rep Robyn Fowler said following a two-length victory in the Sage Painting Hcp (1200m).  “He told us we better come home with a winner.

“She was worried in front but kicked at the furlong and Tom (Sherry) was looking around to see if there was anything making ground.  She’s maturing into a nice filly and was very impressive today.”

Ashra Jahre (3f Headwater – Jahre by Encosta De Lago) is from the immediate family of Champion South African sprinter Laisserfaire.  Anthony Cummings bought her full-brother for $150,000 at last year’s Classic Sale and he has been named Tristate.

“She jumped, mustered speed and travelled kindly for me,” Sherry reported on Monday.  “She let down nicely and will draw confidence from that win.  She’s still raw but can keep building this prep.”

Vinery has five yearlings by Headwater housed in Barn I at Riverside Stables and bloodstock manager Adam White is keen on his colt (Lot 170) and filly (Lot 172) being offered on Sunday.  “The colt from Montana Diamond looks a real early runner.  He’s a compact type and won’t take long to hit the racetrack.

“The Moohariba is a good-sized filly with a very athletic walk.  Headwater has a promising filly in Money In My Pocket who is also from an Al Maher mare.”

The Highway session on Tuesday includes a Headwater filly from Walklikeanegyptian, an Encosta de Lago half-sister to Flemington Group 1 winner Desert Eagle who later claimed Hong Kong Horse of the Year honours as Grand Delight.

Catalogued as Lot 742, she is a strong, attractive filly with plenty of scope.  Just like Ashra Jahre.
