Heart-attack claims Stratum

Group 1 racehorse and sire Stratum succumbed to a heart-attack at Widden Stud on Tuesday.

The 14 year-old son of Redoute’s Choice died in his paddock.  “It’s a very sad day,” studmaster Antony Thompson said.  “He was such a lovely kind horse.  He was great to work with and he will be sadly missed.”

Stratum won the 2005 Golden Slipper before retiring to the Hunter Valley where he was crowned Australia’s Champion First Season Sire and Champion 2YO Sire.  His breakout start at stud was highlighted by 2010 Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily.

His Group 1 winners also included Streama (Australian Oaks, Flight Stakes, George Main Stakes, Doomben Cup), Stratum Star (Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes) and Southern Lord (Levin Classic).

Stratum has sired 30 stakes winners with progeny earnings over $45 million.
