Trainer Rob Heathcote gained some consolation for the defeats of stable stars Buffering and Solzhenitsyn at Moonee Valley when Greytfilly scored a decisive victory at Doomben on Saturday.
Greytfilly (2f Ferocity – Sun Kisses by Hennessy) kept the stable flag flying at Doomben with a commanding win over Octane Flyer in the Mastec Handicap (1110m). The winner rushed home the final 200m sectional in a slick 11.38 seconds.
Heathcote’s talented youngster was a $30,000 buy at the Gold Coast Magic Millions. Her dam Sun Kisses was a juvenile winner at Doomben and she is a half-sister to G2 winning sire Face Value (Red Ransom). Sun Kisses has colts by Oaklands Stud sires Wicked Style and Ferocity in the pipeline.
Greytfilly surprised jockey Ryan Wiggins. “I didn’t think she was capable of doing that,” he said. “She can be a handful but does have a big motor.”
Wiggins rated the filly a Magic Millions Classic contender. “She put paid to them quickly once I asked her for an effort,” Wiggins explained. “There’s plenty of improvement still to come leading up to the Magic Millions.”
Greytfilly is the first two year-old winner by Oaklands Stud sire Ferocity this season. His first crop provided 5 juvenile winners in 2010 and he followed up with 12 in 2011 and 6 last season. Overall, Ferocity has sired 85 winners of 179 races at a 52% strike-rate and, with more stakes winners, would be priced much higher than an $8,800 (inc gst) service fee.
