Former Australian shuttler Okawango has died in a paddock accident in Turkey. The Kingmambo sire was 14 and had been based at Karacabey Stud since 2008.
Okawango shuttled to Foxes Hollow (NSW) and Linden Park (Victoria) for three seasons until 2006. There have been 24 southern winners to date with none at stakes level.
Sent to France when a young colt, Okawango (USA) won all three outings at two including an eye-catching finish to claim the 2000 Grand Criterium (1600m). He emulated his own sire Kingmambo at Longchamp.
He retired to Huma Park Stud in Ireland and left behind several useful performers in Europe, notably the Darley Stakes winner Steele Tango and Group 1-placed juvenile Declaration Of War. His first Turkish-bred crop are three-year-olds and include the G3 winners Bay Serif, Browser and Queen Amidala.
Okawango was bred by the Wertheimer brothers and his dam Krissante (Kris) is from the immediate family of Authorized.
