Armidale Stud stallions generated four winners at Launceston on Wednesday evening highlighted by grand old galloper Beven Heights.
The George Blacker trained veteran won The Examiner Cup (2100m) while Shardoo (Savoire Vivre), Speed Control (Tough Speed) and Tuktoyaktuk (Savoire Vivre) all saluted on the Thousand Guineas programme.
Beven Heights (8g Grand Royale – The Halls by Grosvenor) cost just $8,000 from the Grenville Stud draft at the 2005 Tasmanian yearling sales. He is raced by Mrs Henny Kundsen and has now won 11 races and $146,000.
The gelding had won the 2010 and 2011 Longford Cups but was unplaced behind The Cleaner (Savoire Vivre) when going for a hat-trick on New Year’s Day.
Blacker campaigned Beven Heights in the major cups last season and this latest win will no doubt encourage the wily trainer to follow a similar path with the AAMI Hobart Cup (2200m) on February 13 a likely target.
Former Armidale Stud resident Grand Royale (Danzig) has sired 64 winners of 208 races at a 50% strike-rate. The 16 year-old stallion is now used as a sire of equestrian horses.
