Hollow celebration for Helter Skelter

In what would have been a hollow celebration, Helter Skelter marked the fourth anniversary of his Magic Millions Sprint victory by siring his initial winner at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.  First starter Psychodelic led from go-to-whoa for a two length victory in the Access Insulation Hcp (1000m) on the cushion circuit.

The 2007 Magic Millions was the last of Helter Skelter’s 10 wins and it helped him build a bank of $495,000 before retiring to stud.  He is by Eureka Stud’s former shuttler Piccolo as is 2011 Magic Millions Sprint winner Temple Of Boom.

Sadly, Helter Skelter’s stud career never really got past first gear.  There were just 8 foals conceived from his endeavours in 2007, three from 2008 and there have been none recorded so far from 2009.  The Australian Stud Book lists Willowbend Stud as his home base and he was advertised for a $3,300 service fee in 2010.

Willowbend Stud’s Kentucky bred freshman Southwestern Heat encountered problems during his sole season at the Beaudesert property in 2009.  A stakes winning son of Gone West, he sired just three reported foals last year.

Psychodelic (2g Helter Skelter – Valiant Miss by Snippets) was a $6,500 buy for Caloundra trainer Bette Harden at the 2010 Magic Millions HIT Sale.  He is out of an unraced mare from a celebrated Newhaven Park family that generated the G1 winners Burst and Victory Prince.

Valiant Miss foaled minor winners by Palace Music, Langfuhr and Catcher in the Rye before her Helter Skelter youngster.  The mare also has a yearling filly by Zabeel sire Dark Lord.
