Street Cry filly Hollywoodboulevard captured her second South African feature this month with a flying finish in the G3 Fillies Mile at Turffontein on Saturday.
Her win was the only highlight in an otherwise disappointing afternoon for Australian imports on the G1 Summer Cup card.
Hollywoodboulevard (3f Street Cry – Soneria by Filante) claimed the R1.5 million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup on November 6 and she parlayed that payday into black-type back at Turffontein on Saturday.
The Charles Laird trained filly was giving the leaders some ten lengths before Guillermo Figueroa angled her into clear running. Once the Aussie bred filly saw daylight, she lengthened stride and forged clear to win by four lengths.
Dubawi filly Happy Archer started an odds-on favourite only to finish a well beaten seventh. She disputed the lead but quickly came under pressure and didn’t look anything like the same filly who won the G1 Thekwini Stakes last season.
Hollywoodboulevard had also shown potential at two and has really gone on with the job this time in. She was bred and sold by Bridgeview Stud for $6,000 as a foal at the 2008 Magic Millions National weanling sale. Her dam Soneria has since foaled fillies by Universal Prince and Tiger Hill.
Hollywoodboulevard was entered for the 2009 South African Ready To Run 2YO Sale by Summerhill Stud and Laird signed the sale sheet on behalf of his major client Marcus Jooste for R900,000 (AUD 129,840). The Fillies Mile boosted her record to 7: 3-0-1 and she has banked R979, 675.
The Summer Cup meeting was one of mixed blessings for the rest of the Australian bred contingent on Saturday.
Boom colt Perana (Rock of Gibraltar) started favourite in the feature race and gave a good sight at Turffontein but was no match for his long-priced stablemate Flirtation in the straight. She produced a powerful late run to clinch a ninth Summer Cup for trainer Mike de Kock.
Flirtation (4f Silvano – French Treasure by Mullineaux) was placed in a couple of fillies’ classics last season and went into the Summer Cup at $26 despite a last-start win in the Yellowwood Handicap at Turffontein.
Mother Russia, Rudi Rocks and Aslan filled out the quartet and the result was a triumph for top stallion Silvano. The Maine Chance Stud resident sired three of the first four home.
Silvano (Lomitas) was the first South African-based sire to ever shuttle to Europe when he travelled to Gestüt Fährhof in 2009. He was a G1 winner of the Arlington Million, HK Queen Elizabeth Cup and Singapore Cup and also ran fourth in the 2001 Cox Plate behind Northerly, Sunline and Viscount.
Galileo’s Destiny (Galileo) was another Aussie import beaten by an outsider in the G2 Investec Dingaans. The Charles Laird trained colt got the better of arch-rival Kavanagh only to be bloused out by $41 longshot The Apache (Mogok).
Laird also saddled up Exclaim’n’exclude in the G2 Hertz Merchants. The Exceed And Excel colt got to the front at the 400m marker but finished a fading sixth to Arabian Mist (Muhtafal) who successfully defended his Merchants title from last year.
