Jet-set in the high country

Jetconi buttered up for a second feature in the space of a week when he snatched the Italian Plate in a three-way photo finish at Tatura on Sunday.

The son of Swettenham Stud sire Bianconi was coming off a successful defence of his Wodonga Cup crown.

Jetconi (7g Bianconi – Fearless Finesse by Noble Bijou) is right at home among the traditionally tough high-country horses at Mansfield where he is trained by Gerald Egan.

Last week, he joined Green Pick (Picnicker) who was the last horse to double up in the Wodonga Cup in 2003 and 2004.  “He was big and fat at the start of this campaign,” Egan said. “But we gave him four runs before he came good in the Wodonga Cup.  I’m proud of him.”

Jetconi has won 9 races starting with a Swan Hill maiden back in June 2008.  Egan’s former apprentice Nick Hall was on board for the first win but Jason Benbow has been steering for the last two Sundays.

“I told Jason to go full bore on the corner in the Wodonga Cup,” Egan recalled.  “We won it last year but there was a protest so it was a relief when he scored easily this time.”

Jetconi is owned by Southern Cross Racing and the Italian Plate purse increased his earnings to $234,000.  He is one of 45 winners for Bianconi in Australia this season.

His dam Fearless Finesse is owned by Goulburn Ovens TAFE.  She foaled fillies by My Patriarch and Redente before missing to Gonski last year.
