Jewel crowned in the Perth Cup

Leading Sunspeed owner-breeder Bob Peters landed his fourth G2 Perth Cup (2400m) with Western Jewel at Ascot on New Year’s Eve.

It was a case of second time lucky for Western Jewel.  She had finished fourth to Guest Wing in her first attempt to win the west’s premier staying event.

Western Jewel (5m Jeune – Our Millster by Marooned) stormed home to score a two length victory over God Has Spoken (Blackfriars) and Senhor Da Gama (Commands).  “She would have won with a better run last year,” trainer Grant Williams said.  “I told Kyra (Yuill) to save her for one last sprint.”

Peters and his wife Sandra had captured previous Perth Cups with Field Officer (Old Spice), Crown Prosecutor (Grand Lodge) and Lords Ransom (Jeune).

Western Jewel is by 1994 Melbourne Cup hero Jeune out of mare by 1986 Sydney Cup winner Marooned.

Peters bred the winner from his Ascot winner Our Millster.  Second dam Timeless Action (Serheed) won the Listed Sunspeed Champion Stakes at two and the G3 WATC Strickland Stakes as a three year-old.

Our Millster has Hard Spun 2yo named Western Blaze, a yearling filly by Arrowfield sire Charge Forward and she foaled another Hard Spun colt in September.
