Johannapine will be given a chance to convert a superb strike-rate into black-type after winning the Shadwell Farm Kentucky Hcp (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
Johannapine (4m Johannesburg – Alpine Echo by Danzero) has won three of her four starts for trainer Mark Webb. There were excuses for her only loss at Flemington last month when the saddle slipped.
Webb is in two minds whether to set her for the G1 Oakleigh Plate or head to Sydney for the G2 Breeders Classic at Warwick Farm on February 18. “You prefer to stay at home but she does handle the wet tracks beautifully and Sydney is copping a lot of rain,” Webb explained. “She’s still green and was a bit lost in front but she knuckled down and got the job done.”
Johannapine was a $42,500 buy as a foal from the Swettenham draft at the 2008 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale. She is from an unraced sister to Listed MRC Quezette Stakes winner Pinezero. Her second dam Alpine Spirit (Kenmare) is a half-sister to Swettenham Stud’s G1 performer Schubert (Salieri).
The Caulfield victory continued Webb’s winning start to 2012. A week earlier, he claimed the $100,000 Swettenham Stud Summer Championship Final with Over Quota.
