Karuta Classic on Gold Coast

Karuta Queen propelled Arrowfield sire Not A Single Doubt to the top of the Australian Juvenile sires’ premiership with a stunning all the way victory in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic on Saturday.

The at the Gold Coast Classic was a dream result for Arrowfield.  Karuta Queen defeated Combat Kitty (General Nediym) and Schiffer (Snitzel).  The third filly home is also be an Arrowfield resident.

Not A Single Doubt stands alongside his own sire Redoute’s Choice at Arrowfield and he has established a sizeable lead for the 2YO title with prizemoney of $1.51 million.  The Golden Slipper will ultimately decide the premiership and Karuta Queen is a nominal favourite for Rosehill’s $3.50 million feature on April 2.

Karuta Queen (2f Not A Single Doubt – Card Queen by Final Card) is unbeaten in four starts after a running double at Rosehill in October and the Wyong Magic Millions in December.  She was bred and offered for sale by Stuart Ramsey’s Turangga Stud and was purchased by Sydney businessman Glenn Williams at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale.

Williams spent $480,000 on 14 yearlings at the 2010 Magic Millions and among his buys was a $30,000 filly he named Karuta Queen.  “I liked the look of her in the sale ring,” Williams recalled.  “I’m a bit of a Not A Single Doubt fan and I remembered her dam Card Queen who was a good mare.

The Magic Millions was also a great result for Durham Lodge owner David Smith.  The West Australian based breeder bought Card Queen for $55,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.  

Durham has a Show a Heart half-brother to Karuta Queen catalogued for the 2011 Perth Magic Millions yearling sale in February.  Card Queen was a G3 winner of the VATC Blue Diamond Prelude at Caulfield and she foaled a filly by Durham sire Blackfriars in September.
