Kaphero kick-started his first draft at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale with a six-figure colt on Tuesday.

The Swettenham Stud stallion has seven yearlings catalogued for Oaklands Junction this week.  Bidding for the Kaphero – Anna Dana youngster turned the corner at six figures before Cranbourne trainer Ken Keys settled the issue at $110,000.

Anna Dana (USA) was stakes placed in Kentucky and his second dam is a half-sister to champion sire Street Cry.  “He’s a nice, well-grown cut of a colt,” Keys said.  “We will give him the opportunity to get up and run and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a two year-old.”

Keys has forged a winning connection with Swettenham in recent years.  He stitched up last year’s LR Cranbourne Cup with Boom ‘n’ Zoom who is by Dash For Cash.  The gelding cost $40,000 and has now earned over $277,000.

“There was a few bob left over from the Cup for the Kaphero colt ,” Keys laughed.  “And I’m sure we won’t have any problems completing the syndicate in him.”

Keys and his wife Louise tried to breed a Kaphero of their own last year when they sent Brava Brava to the Nagambie nursery.  “The mare came up negative but it wasn’t the stallion’s fault,” Keys said.  “She’s missed four times in the last six years.”

Kaphero represents the Danehill sireline through Danzero and he won 10 sprints topped by the G3 MVRC McEwan Trophy at Moonee Valley.  His dam Kapchat was a G1 winner of the STC Coolmore Classic at Rosehill and his second dam is a half-sister to the dam of Golden Slipper winner Courtza.

“I have the utmost faith in Kaphero as a sire,” Swettenham owner Adam Sangster said in the lead-up to the Melbourne Premier Sale.  “He was bred here and, to this day, is still one of the nicest yearlings to ever come off the property.”
