Sunspeed breeder Trevor Delroy has suffered a body blow with news his Group 1 producing mare Kisumu has died in New Zealand.
Kisumu (Carnegie) was only nine years-old and was put down after a paddock accident. She had missed to Zabeel last year.
Delroy bred the Zabeel Group 1 winners Zabeelionaire (2012 South Australian Derby) and Gondokoro (2013 Queensland Oaks) from the mare. The Wyadup Valley Farm operator retained an unnamed 2yo sister to the classic winners and sold their yearling brother for $420,000 to Jadeskye Racing at the 2013 Inglis Easter Sale.
Kisumu cost $67,500 at the 2005 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale and began her career in Perth before returning east where she won at Sale and was placed behind Miss Finland in the G2 Angus Armanasco Stakes at Caulfield.
Kisumu had been covered by Zabeel every year since retiring to stud. Her final foal, a Zabeel filly, was born on October 4 last year.
