Snippetson has done extra well with 18 winners from his first crop. There’s no black-type among them but the Widden Stud resident redressed that state of affairs when his filly Miss Upstart won at Pukekohe on Saturday.
Miss Upstart is from his second crop and she closed late to win the Listed Murdoch Newell Stakes from the Perfectly Ready youngsters Precise and Brackenwood.
Last year’s Murdoch Newell Stakes was won by G1 Victoria Derby winner Lion Tamer.
Miss Upstart (2f Snippetson – Magic Star by Danzero) is trained by Graham Richardson for owner-breeder Warren Pegg. “She tries hard and this was our immediate goal,” Richardson said. “Our next one will probably be the Matamata Breeders Stakes.”
Pegg purchased her dam Magic Star carrying Miss Upstart for $34,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions Winter Sale. He catalogued the filly for the 2010 Karaka yearling sale but she failed to make a $15,000 reserve.
Magic Star has a yearling colt by Dubai Destination. The mare is a half-sister to Make Mine Magic (Canadian Silver), a G2 winner of the QTC Grand Prix and Sir Byrne Hart Stakes.
Snippetson (Snippets) was a $550,000 graduate of the 2003 Gold Coast Magic Millions when offered by Stratheden Stud. He was trained by John O’Shea and was a Listed winner of the Eskimo Prince Hcp and Maurice McCarten Stakes before retiring to Widden in 2006.
