Quintessential (NZ) notched a second G1 Queensland Oaks for Trelawney Stud’s Taylor family at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The leading Kiwi breeders also won with Zabeel filly Vouvray in 2000.
Quintessential (3f Fast ‘N’ Famous – Florette by Sword Dance) had put the writing on the wall after a flying fourth to Invest in the G3 Doomben Roses last month. She was always travelling sweetly to win by more than two lengths from Eliza Blues (O’Reilly).
NZ bred fillies dominated the home defence in the Queensland classic. The first two are by Waikato Stud sires and so too fourth home Dowager Queen (Savabeel). Third placegetter Vittoria is by Westbury Stud stallion Postponed.
“It turned out to be a real slog but she did it,” trainer John Sargent said. “It’s hard to win any race in Australia let alone a Group 1. I will wait and see how she pulls up before deciding whether to back up in the Queensland Derby.”
Quintessential earned a trip across the Tasman after winning the G3 Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham in January. She had been purchased by Nearco Stud’s Greg Tomlinson for $70,000 at the 2010 NZB Select yearling sale.
Tomlinson is a Christchurch based businessman and he has a portfolio of over 50 broodmares. His Queensland Oaks filly is one of five winners for USA bred dam Florette and, until now, her foals had been headed by Sydney galloper Halfametreshort (Carnegie).
Quintessential is from the first crop of Fast ‘n’ Famous who won the G3 Gilgai Stakes at Flemington and LR Starlight Stakes at Rosehill before retiring to Waikato Stud. He is one of 10 sons of Redoute’s Choice to have sired a stakes winner.
Trelawney Stud is New Zealand’s longest-running commercial stud. Founded in 1930 by Seton Otway, it has been home to champion sires the calibre of Foxbridge and Alcimedes. Purchased by the Taylor family 20 years ago, Trelawney is managed by Brent Taylor and now concentrates on enhancing its breeding stock instead of standing stallions.
Trelawney completed a black-type double in Brisbane on Saturday. Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup winner Lights Of Heaven (Zabeel) is another graduate of the Cambridge based nursery.
