Champion sire Gulch has been retired by Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky due to declining fertility. The Mr Prospector stallion is rising 26.
Gulch has been based at Lane’s End since being crowned Champion USA sprinter in 1988. He was a Group 1 winner of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, Carter Hcp and Metropolitan Hcp (twice).
Gulch is best known as the sire of 1995 Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch who shuttled to Coolmore Stud for seven years until 2002. His Australian G1 winners included the fillies Tempest Morn and Tully Thunder who were successful in the Australasian Oaks in Adelaide.
His only other Australian G1 horse was 2002 Toorak Handicap winner Shot Of Thunder. He was based at Glenlogan Park but died after just one season at stud.
Tsuimai, a G2 winner of the STC Gloaming Stakes, provided another avenue for the Thunder Gulch sireline when he retired to Oaklands Stud. However, his stud career was also cut short after three seasons when he was put down in July 2008.
Gulch is in vogue in Europe through Nayef who was a Group 1 winner of the 1998 Champion Stakes and Juddmonte International. Based at Shadwell, Nayef has sired four stakes winners this year and is fifth on the third crop sires’ table in UK-Ireland. Gulch also sired dual Classic winner and sire Point Given.
Gulch’s Kentucky based stallion Kipling is also making his mark at stud despite limited opportunities. Kipling is a brother to Shadwell Turf Mile winner Court Vision and his stock includes 2007 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Kip Deville.
