Champion mare Horlicks was represented by her sixth and final winner when grey gelding Tiger scored a two length victory in the Romano’s Pizzas Maiden at Riccarton on Wednesday.
Tiger (4g One Cool Cat – Horlicks by Three Legs) broke through at his home track after being placed three times further down the coast at Timaru.
Horlicks is 27 and in retirement at Cambridge Stud. She was pensioned after foaling Tiger who is raced by owner-breeder Graham de Gruchy and Riccarton trainer Terri Rae.
Horlicks reached a career high with a memorable victory in the 1989 Japan Cup. She won 17 races overall and her other Group 1 victories included the 1989 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington when she defeated an all-star cast headlined by Vo Rogue and Super Impose.
Horlicks (Three Legs – Malt by Moss Trooper) was raced by de Gruchy and was trained by Dave O’Sullivan. At stud, she foaled Melbourne Cup winner Brew and G2 Avondale Guineas winner Bubble who were both by Cambridge Stud champion Sir Tristram. Her Maroof filly Latte foaled G1 AJC Derby winner Fiumicino (Zabeel).
Tiger is from the first southern crop of One Cool Cat who shuttled to Cambridge Stud for four seasons until 2008. He arrived from Coolmore Stud’s Irish base with High Chaparral but there have been stark differences in their subsequent stud careers.
High Chaparral soared into the stratosphere after siring Group 1 winners So You Think, Monaco Consul, Descarado and Shoot Out in his first southern crop.
One Cool Cat was an unmitigated disaster and Coolmore dispatched him soon enough to stand in South Korea.
