Laurel Oak double at Rosehill

Smart Amelia launched a double for Laurel Oak Bloodstock (FBAA) on Saturday that was six weeks in the making.

“She was purchased as a future broodmare in May and set for Rosehill today,” Laurel Oak manager Louis Mihalyka revealed. “We love it when a plan comes together!”

Smart Amelia (pictured) cost $240,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale and repaid $53,375 of that price-tag first-up in the Spring On Sale Hcp (1100m).  The daughter of Smart Missile had been stakes placed at Randwick, Rosehill and Scone before changing hands on the Gold Coast.

There’s more black-type close-up through her half-brother The Mission (Choisir) and second-dam Carry On Cutie (More Than Ready) who won their editions of the G1 Champagne Stakes at Randwick.

Laurel Oak also raced another talented Smart Missile galloper named Like A Shot. A winner of his last two starts in Canberra, he died following routine knee surgery earlier this month.

Vaucluse Bay (Al Maher) completed the Laurel Oak double at Rosehill despite sitting three-wide in the Sydney West Hcp (2000m).

A homebred from NZ mare Power Of Love (Bahhare), he has now earned over $350,000 including $67,000 in bonuses courtesy of BOBS.

Trained by Chris Waller, he’s a stablemate of Laurel Oak 3yo filly Sweet Scandal who won at Warwick Farm last Wednesday.

Sweet Scandal (Sepoy) was a $230,000 purchase from Widden Stud at the 2016 Inglis Easter yearling sale. She’s a lightly-raced half-sister to Sir Bacchus, a 7-time winner in 26 starts for Laurel Oak.

“She’s done a good job to win a maiden and then lead all the way against older mares in a Benchmark 75,” Waller said on Saturday. “She’s a progressive horse. Blake (Shinn) kept a good hold and she quickened nicely.”
